[xk8] Gasoline

With the skyrocketing price of gas, is it imperative to use premium
in a 1998 XK8?

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

The compression on the XK8 was pretty high, I believe it’s 11.8:1

If you don’t use premium the computer will try to compensate to keep the
engine from hurting itself.

But, are you REALLY worried about a few bucks a tank at the risk of an
$11,000 USD engine replacement?-----Original Message-----

In reply to a message from Jeff Cline sent Fri 25 Jan 2008:

Agree with Jeff all the way.

The 4.0L is rated 10.75:1 Comp

The 4.2L is rated 11.0:1 Comp

The octane rating of gasoline has a direct relationship to
compression ratio in terms of its burn rate and combustion
efficiency. And, as Jeff states, modern engine management systems
make compensation if different octane rated fuel is used, but you
still pay some price such as reduced performance and impact on mpg.
It might be negligible, but the impact has to be there. In the old
days we used to make adjustments for different octane fuels by
manually changing the ignition advance.

Finally, I totally agree with Jeff, why deviate from the
manufacturer’s requirements, which are based on an actual
calculation, for a few buck savings, especially given the car.–

Sometimes you can find high octane gas for $0.40 cheaper per
gallon. Filling stations are nutty with prices so look around.
Do all the other stuff to help the mpg like high tire pressure (35
psi), keep extra weight out of the car and trunk, change oil,…
the usual tricks. Of course, sometimes you just have to step on the
gas and rip since the car is made for it!!
My 97 XK8 has 182,500 miles. I am hoping to get to 200,000 miles so
that I can watch the mechanic go into shock when I bring it in for
service. They never see a car with so many miles.
Hopefully, the US opens up some oil fields in Alaska - or Jaguar
makes a solar car? ;)–

Mine is a weekend/sunny day driving machine, so I don’t have to
fill up that often so it doesn’t really hurt the wallet all that
much. I burn nothing but Shell V-Power. I haven’t been able to
get greater than 91 Octane here in OKC (any brand), but the car
runs great with it. I believe the owners manual says 93 Octane is
what we ‘‘should’’ use. Our X-Type says to use premium too, but I
break the rules for that one. Even the dealer said that was okay
because of the lower compression. It’s been running fine for 2.5
years/21,000 miles. But for the XK-8, nothing but the best!!!–

Technically you probably can because it has knock sensors
on each cyl. bank…I have run my Acura MDX on regular
gas for years (Acura says use premium) because someone on
the MDX web site monitored the advance curve with premium
and with regular and reported no difference in timing unless
you exceed 5000rpm! Also Honda Pilot which is essentialy the
same vehicle says to use Regular…Acura
dealer says use premium otherwise engine light will come on;
NOT TRUE in 30000 miles!
My wife doesn’t do many miles in her XK8 so we use premium
for her.So we are chicken!–

Yes, I agree. Nothing but the best for the XK8. I like Shell V-Power as well. It does hurt to fill up the tank, but it would hurt only a few dollars less with any lesser fuel.

Shell V-Power is rated at 93 octane around Houston. It used to be rated at 94, but that seems to have changed about a year ago.

This ethanol plan by the enviros is doo-doo. We should not be turning food products into gasoline. From what I understand, it is not even economically or environmentally sound. All my cars get less gas mileage since the country went crazy over ethanol. In fact, one of the local grocers advertises some sort of high content ethanol gasoline that is real cheap. I put it in one of my lesser cars and the thing pinged like crazy.

Instead of buying oil from other countries, we need to drill for American oil with American workers being paid American wages . I don’t understand what is holding this up, especially when most of the enviromental disasters are caused by transport ships. Ok, I’ll get down off my soap box._____________________________________________________________

… Man, I have just the opposite experience with Shell, I have put
it in my ‘‘lesser’’ cars and it pings like crazy, dont touch the
stuff now, maybe its because I am at 7K feet here in NM, but Conoco
works fine here!?–

I have a 1997 XK8 with a new engine(30K). I have run with 87, 89, &
91 octane. I kept records of the gas mileage (mpg) and average
speed (mph) from the car’s trip computer for 15 fillups. Although
this relationship of mpg and average mph has a host of variables, I
wanted to establish a relationship between the two.
As expected the 91 octane rendered the highest mpg. The price
difference between each octane level is approximately $0.10/gallon.
At $3.00/gallon for the 89 octane, the increase in price to use 91
octane is $ 3.10 or 3%. If the gas mileage for 89 octane is say 18
mpg, you would only need an improvement of 18.6 mpg to justified
the $3.10 91 octane. The gas mileage using the 91 octane almost
always exceeded 0.7 mpg, thus using 91 octane provided the lowest
dollar/mile.–
