[xk8] XK8 Brakes

I have a 97 XK8. Love it. The brakes are very soft. When I try to
stop, push hard on the brakes, Not what I would like in stopping
power. I have replaced the front brake pads, thats all. For 4
years have not had to touch the brakes. The brake reservoir is full
for the last 4 years. I would think the brakes on a 97 jag would be
really solid. Anybody have any suggestions. I bought a new FORD
FOCUS… I like the car… when I push on the brakes, it feels
VERY solid… Would think a JAG, would do the same… Do I need
to change all the fluid?? OR what???–

Of course you have to change the fluid, these are typical symptoms
of a brake fluid that has a lot of humidity inside…

I couldn’t repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder.

Could be air in the brakes. Try to have them bleeded (and change the fluid
by the same token). Mine were the same after I painted the calipers and I
had a real time bleeding them, lol.

Ok… I bought a quart of DOT 4 brake fluid… Bled the brakes…
My brakes are still VERY soft. Can’t slide the tires. I think the
XK8 should have better brakes. Other people with 97 XK8’s must
have the same problems… Maybe the XK8 just doesn’t have good
brakes…–

First you need to be absolutely sure you did not suck air back in
during the bleeding process, otherwise you should repeat the
process.

Check the brake hoses, are any of them swelled, cracked or
soft…they may need replacement.

Did the problem get a lot worse after you changes the pads? If so
resurfacing or replacing your rotors might help.

You could also need a new master cylinder.–

I was careful when I bled the brakes… I used a hose, and could
watch as the fluid was pumped out. I replaced both the rotors and
pads in the front. If the master cylinder was bad, wouldn’t the
peddle slowly push to the floor with pressure. Maybe I will buy
the pressure bleeder and try again…–

In reply to a message from kodpkd sent Thu 24 Feb 2011:

A pressure bleeder is a bit more foolproof.

When you bleed into a jar with a hose, it is essential that both
the hose remains immersed and the master cylinder does not go
empty, otherwise air will get in.–
