[E-Type] '62 OTS work status

Team,
Its been a while since I have posted any updates on my '62 OTS.
Engine and 5 speed are in, but the process of blasting and
refinishing all of the auxilliary items is going very slow.
Most items are now done and ready to install - with many set backs
caused by receiving incorrect or defective parts from suppliers.
Getting a bad part can set you back 2 weeks by the time you order,
receive, return/exchange, and re-receive. Photos attached for your
enjoyment.

Are you replacing the interior, or just cleaning it up ?–

Well… I intended to keep the old interior when I first started
the work. Then the work progressed so well that I decided to
replace it with a new biscuit kit. Then, I bought an MG-TC. Then I
bought an MG-M. Now I am trying to decide how I can justify buying
the new interior when the old is still quite usable! That’s a long
answer for ‘‘heck - I dont know what I am going to do with the
interior!!’’ :o)–

When I first got the car the previous owner had the wood extended
all the way onto the doors and around the back of the passenger
compartment. The car looked like a 1950’s Chris-Craft on the
inside! With the wood off the doors and back, the remaining wood on
the dash is actually a nice touch. I plan to keep it for now. I
have a second center gauge console in original dot-aluminum, and
over time I may swap that in leaving the outer sections in wood…
or maybe not.–

Very nice Tom, that dash is beautiful, wish they would have made them
that way originally! It really has a more elegant appearance. It
looks like we have the came color combination

Tom, I’ ve got to admit that I was fully prepared to
absolutely hate your wood dash, but it does look
absolutely great! Reminds me of the early sedans,
S Type, etc., which is certainly not a bad thing. On
the other hand, a restored 50’s Chris Craft is a
thing of beauty and worth a chuck of change.

Chuck,
Oddly, the only pic I have of it only shows part of the door. If
you go to the Photos section of JagLovers and search on ‘‘ugly’’ it
pops up. The wood all around was a ‘‘good’’ idea - but poorly
implemented. Instead of having sleek chrome spears to separate the
wood from the leather panels the previous owner used wood mouldings
(yup - home depot quarter-round and the previous owner eliminated
ALL the vinyl and used leather - even on the sills and doors). In
the end, it was all just too much - too much ‘‘orange/rust’’ leather,
too much wood, etc. When the car is eventually to the state I want
it, I think the wood dash alone will be a nice compliment to an
otherwise stock biscuit series1 interior.–

Thanks. It doesn’t look that ugly. Better than you described
certainly. Unusual? yes. Ugly? Not really.

Then again, I’m looking at a 640x480 image on a 1200+ pixel screen,
not the real thing life size. =)–

It is nice.

My bad, Doug has reminded me, and shown me a photo of Burt’s car.
It was just wood along the tops of the doors.
But still quite lovely with the black interiour.

If you want to see photos you will have to email Doug. Adrian can
confirm if Burt has ever had a wood dash in the car also.–

Tom:

In looking at the photographs of your 3.8 engine installation I see
that you’ve installed by lowering the vehicle over the engine and
that the engine was sitting flat on a wooden support on its sump.
It appears that the sump is bearing the full weight of the engine
and transmission.

I’m wondering if you could tell me whether I could safely store a
3.8 engine I have by simply laying a sturdy board on the garage
floor and letting the engine rest upright on its sump for an
extended period of time - without damaging the sump?

Any thoughts/advice you have will be welcome. Many thanks.–

Reluctantly, against my better wishes, and sadly I have done this. It sat for about 3 months with no ill effects.
Every time I looked at it sitting there, I would rather have been sitting in my underwear on a block of ice.
I would hve expected at least the pan gasket to start l eaking, but it didn’t. Be aware… your mileage may vary.

Mine is a 4.2 and I didn’t time it as well as I could of. The engine
sat on the pan on a board for almost a year, thus far no apparent
damage. I do have a ‘few’ drips from the rear main seal but only
after i drive up our steep driveway into the garage.

I took my repro MiniLites apart for restoration. The steel hubs were
originally installed with 8-5/16" Nyloc nuts. I always hated the way they
looked so I polished up 32 nice stainless cap nuts (that was fun let me tell
you).

Now I’m getting paranoid wondering whether Blue Medium Loctite is sufficient
to hold these things on. I certainly don’t want the wheels on the right
side of the car coming off at speed. Anyone have any ideas as to the
relative effectiveness of the Med Loctite as compared to a Nyloc nut? I
know I could step up to the Red Loctite, but then I’d never be able to get
take them apart again. I’m sure to get bored a year from now and want to
paint them a different color.

Thanks
Eric

There are lot of cars running around with right hand threads on the right
hand side of the car with no Loctite. I think th real issue is how tight you
can tighten them without failing the lug nut. If I were doing it Eric, I think
I’d see if I could find the manufacturers recommended torque for those nuts
and make sure I could tighten them that tight without stripping them. Then I
don’t think I’d even bother with Loctite at all.

Best, Mike Moore
