[E-Type] Question on Wilwood brakes

I have been reading on the forums quite a bit about the Wilwood
brakes. What is the advantage in using them----do they stop better
than the standard brakes on the Jag. What would be the cost to put
them on my '68 and who are the suppliers? I also read that most
people move the original front calipers to the rear—why?
Thanks for the info

Quent,
Whether Wilwoods improve braking or not depends entirely on
your opinions regarding what consitutes good braking. I put them
on my car several years ago, and am quite happy with them. Does
the car stop any faster, or in a shorter distance? Almost
certainly not. For me, the advantage was improved feel, and
reduced pedal effort for really rapid starts. The stock Dunlop
brakes are very non-linear, and the pedal effort required almost
exponentially with increased braking. Making a true maximum effort
stop requires a strong right leg. With the Wilwoods, this effort
is greatly reduced. The reason for moving the old cylinders (not
calipers) from the front to the rear when you install Wilwoods is
to retain proper balance. The Wilwoods have much greater piston
area. If you don’t increase the piston area in the rears, you’ll
end up locking the front brakes well before the rears, which is not
good. However, I haven’t gotten around to swapping mine yet, and
it’s really not that bad. Wilwood upgrades are available from a
number of sources, or you can do your own, as I did. I have a
writeup, and drawing of the necessary brackets, if you want to do
your own and save a little money.–

Quent,
BTW - Your '68 does have Dunlop brakes? There’s absolutely
no advantage to Wilwoods if you have the later Girling brakes.–

mine’s a series 3 so this may not apply to a 68… but the reason I installed
Willwoods was not for improved braking but for better cooling on track. For
street use, the stock series 3 brakes have plenty of stopping power. For
track use, they get too hot… the willwood dissipates het much better.

Yup - there is an advantage. Better braking. More pad on the rotor.
Since they stop better, your front braking will now be out of
balance with the rear - hence, rebuild your old fronts, and move to
the back (old stock fronts are larger than old stock rears).
I think I paid between $400-$500, cant recall. From XKs unlimited.
But CJ and others carry them as well.–

Quentin,

For normal, everyday use, the std brakes on your '68 will fill the bill.

The reason I went with Wilwood’s is because I do a lot of ‘track days’.
The std brakes would get too hot too fast and wah-la… no brakes. I
went one step further on the fronts and designed mtg brackets and rotor
adaptors and put on Wilwood vented fronts. For the back, I went with XJ6
calipers. The balance is spot on. Also run Castrol LMA brakes fluid.

Cheers,

Chuck Anderson

Hi Quentin, Wilwoods are fine, but expensive and if you are looking for a
more reasonable route, read the write-ups on Volvo brake conversions at

http://www.xke-lovers.com/

Go to the “technical” section then to the “Brake conversion” section then
view all the different writ-ups in pdf. I think you’ll see you can do is for
about $50 - $100 dollars.

The real advantage for S1 XKE is the way the sealing rings are arranged. In
the S1 the seals act against the piston cylinder wall in more modern brakes
the seal act against the piston itself. This is much easier to fix and
replace rather than the earlier arrangement. It’s all in the how-to
writ-ups.

Good luck, Brian
