[E-Type] Windshield Chrome Installation

Hello Everyone,

What’s the proper way to attach the right and left windshield
post/pillar chrome trim pieces on my 69’ FHC. The previous owner
replaced the windshield not long before I recently bought the car.
They used what apears to be some sort of windshield rubber sealant
and just pressed the chrome pieces into the sealant, but the pieces
won’t stay in place. Should the void area under the pillar chrome
be completely filled wiht windshield sealant or left open under the
trim. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dale–

In reply to a message from brfd96 sent Wed 23 Nov 2005:

There should be a sheet metal screw and a couple of pop
rivets that secure the back edge of the chrome to the
windscreen post. That is, the screws and pop rivets are in
the door jam area.

The chrome piece is formed so that the pressure presented by
the attachments will hold it tightly in place. That being
said, it is a good idea to use a dab of weatherstrip
adhesive beneath the spear part of the chrome to give it a
little help staying down.

Hi Dale,
I have gone through this now with 2 series 1 roadsters. The problem on both
of them was that they no longer fit either due to re-plating or somehow the
new windshields caused them not to fit.

What I did:

I carefully closed up the spear by bending it very carefully.I think I bent
the liong piece on the pillar and also closed up the spea.r I used very small
sheet metal screws (3 or 4 I think) and I had to re-drill the A post. I
started out with a horrible fit, but by very patiently bending and fitting, I got
the spear to fit on the top side under the lower windshield gasket. At
least in my case, it made a big difference to tighten the screws each time I
fitted it. I DID crack the re-plated chrome slightly on one, but its hard to see.

Also, I read a local world-class restorer (Dave Ferguson of Images) say that
he always uses new a post chrome because platng distorts them too badly, and
they crack when you straighten them. So, I have a small un-noticeable crack
that was the result of saving $500!
I did not use glue, but I sure thought about it!

Good Luck!
Mike Moore

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the help. I see a hole in the top and bottom chrome trim
pieces that run accross the top and bottom of the windshield where
the pillar pieces should attach at the top and bottom, but there is
nothing on the back side of the pillar trim to attach them to these
holes. Am I missing something? There is no attachment mechanism on
the back side of the post chrome pieces. Surely you don’t drill
thru these beautiful pieces of chrome trim and pop rivet or screw
them from the outside.

Thanks,
Dale–

That’s certainly how it is done on the roadster. I believe they are
mostly obscured by the rubber trim that glues over the top of them. I
take it yours are new. Interesting that they don’t come pre-drilled.

I meant to mention that the pillar cap holds the top of the
chrome pillar trim in place.

In reply to a message from brfd96 sent Wed 23 Nov 2005:

The coupe trim installation is a little different from the
roadster. Polyurethane winshield sealant will certainly hold
it if the chrome is clean. Just apply some generous
squiggles of it to the void behind and press it into place.

Then carefully apply a neat bead along e bottom and another
at the top where it fits under the ridge of the roof. Tape
will help produce a clean bead.

I was lucky with my re-chroming but I have noticed this
tendency for re-chromed pieces to crack. Hydrogen
embrittlement from the process, I think.–

Dale,

I appologize! The information I gave you regarding the
screws is for the OTS only. I simply missed that you have an
FHC.

The chrome trim on both the FHC and 2+2 does not wrap around
into the door jam and thus must be held with adhesive only.

I’m told that the proper adhesive to use is 3M Weatherstrip–

No holes, no screws, no rivets, just glue, and lots of it. 3M
weatherstrip adhesive works best, just follow the directions
exactly. You may also want to use the black stuff, it’s less
noticeable if it squeezes out the side; part number 080010 (I
think).

Yes the black stuff in the red box is strong stuff. Just be careful not
to get it anywhere it shouldn’t be. Also it works best, and is easiest
to remove (should you ever need to) if you apply a very thin layer to
both parts, let them tack up, and then assemble them. It took me almost
four hours to remove my front cowl seal because I applied the stuff too
thick.
