Exhaust note with stainless exhaust

I put a Double S stainless system on my 69 OTS over 15 years ago and think it sounds great.
They stand behind their product. About 10 years in, a pinhole opened up on the muffler. I sent a photo to the fellow on Vancouver Island who represented them and they sent me a new muffler

I wonder what wrapping the pipe, and not the muffler, will do to the sound. That leaves glass fiber band. Or excess soot from the inside.

The exhaust is an instrument, thinner and much harder tubing (itā€™s not about saving cost) will never sound as nice as normal steel. Saxophones arenā€™t made of stainless either.

I have tried different ideas with my system and currently have classic fabs system including the header. The system has a reasonable sound until you get on the RPMā€™s and then it rips. I liked the sound of steel headers that I had better.

Hi not sure about that i had an exhaust box & pipe fail and was told that, but I have had a s/s exhaust fitted to my daimler double 6 series 3 it is not as quite outside the car hope this helps Bob.

That is exactly what I did.

As my Dad would say ā€˜TURN THAT THING DOWN!ā€™.

Me too. Stainless down pipes with the rest being mild steel. Not loud at all but you can hear it at idle if you are standing behind the car.

I donā€™t think Classic Fabs offer a system with stock 1.75" pipes but maybe they will if you ask. Best sound IMHO comes from stock manifolds, s/s 1.75" pipes, straight through s/s silencers (stock are baffled) and mild steel resonators (stock were straight through anyway).

The beautiful Jaguar growl comes from the mild steel resonator tips - tap them with a wrench to hear why - and the choice of baffled or straight through silencers is just a volume control. Jaguar knew this which is why they changed the resonators for the 4.2 to meet customer demand.

Bear in mind that using big bore pipes will make you louder but slower!

Mild steel chromed resonators are available on eBay for not too much money.

David mine is 1.75 all the way through and is classic fabs

David. What ever happened to the classic jaguar systems that were meant to be the best thing since sliced bread, from what i seen at the nec show not much to write home about.anyone else like to comment ?

Side note! Reminds me of a story from the distant past:

In 1972, I was 19 and drove my beater (at the time) S1 OTS from college in Colorado to California to help my family collate and pack up my recently deceased grandparentsā€™ house full of memories.

On the 1,000+ mile journey, my rusted mufflers gave out and the exhaust sounded like a freaking hot rod. I pulled into my grandparentsā€™ hoity-toity town of Piedmont, CA, and at a stoplight, a guy pulls up beside me and gives me the eagle eye. Iā€™m sure he was thinking, ā€œthereā€™s a long haired hippy in a loud Jag with Connecticut license plates and an illegal exhaust system.ā€

Well I didnā€™t like the look of him either. So when the light changed, I gunned it and kept him in my smoke. The a$$hole followed me to the house, and made a point of dressing me down when I got out of the car.

ā€œWe watch out for people like you in our town, young man! What the hell do you think youā€™re doing?!ā€

I said, ā€œIā€™m visiting my grandparents, sir. I have the key, sir. See, sir? Goodbye, sir,ā€ as I turned and walked in the front door. Iā€™m sure when he got home, he yelled at his wife, in irritation, ā€œkids these days!ā€

The replacement was in stock at Midas in Oakland. It cost 44 bucks, installed ($290 today).

I just fitted the Bell stainless sports system ( straight through centre boxes ) . It was well made , but some clumsy welding made it a pita to fit . Just ran it today and the sound is certainly different to the old rusty steel one - higher pitched and noisier , dont know how it will be on a long run - mind you , the cars so noisy anyway it probably won`t make much difference .

Thks for the comments Mark

The mild steel exhausts were made for Jaguar by one of the exhaust system specialists. They now seem to have dropped mild steel and are offering stainless, again from the same exhaust specialist.

I had a complete mild streel system made for my car by a local specialist using original patterns they had in storeage. I then had the resonators chromed. It sounds wonderfully period but you can get 95% of the way there using a stainless system with mild steel mufflers.

David

It seems to me itā€™s the resonators that rust out the header pipes are ok as long as you donā€™t damage the flex joints in repair work and the mufflers I donā€™t really know, we drive them so little. Use to be stainless was all the rage not so sure anymore listening to the comments

Cheers. Jim

I did replace the mufflers with SS last winter before I put it away early this spring. Everything else was left in mild steel. It seemed to me to have a very nice, mellow but still throaty sound

Best stainless systemā€¦. Classic fabs scotland

OK, Danny Boy, wassup - is this actually going to happen sometime? No rush but patient people want
to know.

Not even close to stock, but the best sounding system on my E was an Abarth. The difference between mild steel and stainless does not bother me, but I do miss that Abarth. Of course, it rotted out in a matter of years, even when the car was driven daily.

Yep but car not here at moment ā€¦.getting front end alignment camber and caster and heights etc being checked by my mechanic ā€¦.( I always have my cars checked for stuff I donā€™t have in workshop and a check on my mechanical components as safety is my highest priority) in a long queue hopefully I will have it home before Christmas

Loved it!!

Looked high and low for a NOS set, but could never find one.
