Hello

How does the heating control work?

When I set it to manual it gets warm.

If I switch to AUTO, only cold, regardless of whether I set the controller to warm or cold.

What am I doing wrong ?

UP is for the coldest air possible out of the vents, Down will warm the air while still allowing fully cold air out the foot well vents. Yes that’s how the slider works. All the way up - cold air from the face side vents so you don’t fall asleep with heat in your face.
All the way down, toasty air from face side vents and the footwell. Halfway, bit o both.

Now if you’re on auto and have the knob set at 20c-25c and you park in the sun, the a/c will kick in and blow cold until the car cools down enough to get to where you have it set.
This is assuming you have working A/C
