How smooth is your engine?

Not too shabby, reminds me of the glass of water @kirweekid had on a window shelf when he was working in Christchurch, water surface trembled, yep another little earthquake.

Going back to this video, it almost sounds like the hisser is on or a vacuum leak. I will check all hoses for possible leaks. The engine was very warm to the point we used a kevlar sleeve. It gets really hot near that pin. I’m gonna design a bent spoon tool to reach the pin with ease.

The carbs hiss too, especially without filter, but do check.

I had the plenum and filter on during this test.

Any particular way once I am driving to tell if it is too rich or lean? I once left the choke on and Angela was following me and getting fumes and black smoke. May I guess that a too lean condition would cause backfiring through the carbs and shuddering?

Well done Paul a great job. They should all be that smooth but everything has to be spot on. A sure sign of a sound engine.
A very forgiving engine even when things aren’t 100%. I love em

Took the car out for a spin and drove it like I stole it. Round-a-bouts are a blast and acceleration is instantaneous without any hesitation. I will check the plugs next month to see where I stand with mixture settings.

One thing I did notice and always have, is that on heavy cornering, the floats allow fuel to go into the overflow pipes. I have installed extension rubber fuel lines to move any dripping of fuel further down almost to ground level.

I’m considering buying a fuel analyzer of the type you stick into the tail pipe. I don’t want to install the bung style as I don’t want a gauge inside the car. Any recommendations on make and model for a decent quality tester?

Very smooth. Doesn’t shake at all or run hot…

Former list-member Rick Holland achieved much the same effect on his XK120 by utilizing a tiny piece of chewing gum.

Hmmm. Never thought of balancing a coin on the carb damper. What about the Pinot Grigio test? I took this video last summer.

Shaken, not stirred

When I learnt to drive, I had a few lessons with a Ford Escort before swapping to (what is now) my Mk2. The Jaguar engine was so smooth and silent after the Ford that I kept thinking that it had stalled.

Back in my youth I worked at a service station. It was a big place that had four service bays, rented U-Haul trucks, sold used cars and had a parking lot out back. One of their customers kept his old Willys in that parking lot and came by periodically to drive it. Since I was the low man on the totem pole I was tasked with retrieving it whenever he wanted it. I had driven it a few times, and was very impressed with how smooth and quiet it was. One night around closing time the owner came to pick it up and I went to the back lot to bring it out. When I got out of the car the rest of the workers were standing around it, chatting with the owner for several minutes, while one guy had his foot resting on the bumper. Once again I mentioned how smooth and quiet the car was, which the other guys scoffed at. “That old thing? Ha!” Anyway, as the owner was getting into his car I told the guys to listen when the owner started it up. The owner got into the car and drove off. The guys said that they hadn’t heard him start the engine. The reason for that was because I had never shut it off, and it had been sitting there idling the whole time and no one ever knew it. Then I got into my MK2 and drove home. (mandatory Jaguar content)
