[xj] battery?

It is out of the car. This is not the way I was doing it, but it will
be now. I’ll let you know how I go. Thanks Doug.

Now, I know you just said this, but I am in effect applying + to the
solenoid twice, once on the big lug, and once to the small connector
that the red/white wire would go to, correct?>> Just to clarify, the starter is out of the car, right?

Using heavy cables (like jump start cables) you’ll want to ground the
starter case to battery “-” and attach battery “+” to the large lug on the
solenoid. Use a third wire…about 12 gauge or so…to apply voltage to the
red/wire wire.

Is that how you’re doing it?

Right !

That’s how it is arranged when the starter is in the car. The case is
grounded thru the engine block. The big lug on the solenoid gets voltage
from the firewall “+” post, and the red/white wire get voltage from the
starter relay.

Alright, all of these instructions were great, thanks again Carl for
the clarifications with regards to bench testing. I just have one
more problem. Getting the starter back in the car. I’ve gone
underneath, hooked up a rope to help raise it into position, and now
have a drill bit as a guide so that I know that at least one hole is
lined up, but I can’t get the screws to fasten as I am fastening blind
into the other hole. Is there a trick anyone has, or is it just sort
of keep-at-it, and/or remove other engine parts sort of problem?

Keep at it.

Even though it’s a slight interference fit, if the mounting shoulder is
clean and free of burrs, and perhaps a bit of grease added, you should be
able to rotate the starter a bit to get a perfect alignment with the bolt
holes.

And, if the starter isn’t fully and squarely seated you’ll never get the
bolts started.

I find taking a break and returning to the task a bit later usually solves
the problem

Just to close this thread (sort of), I followed all these instructions
and it worked perfectly. The only thing I would add was that it was a
two person job while putting it back in, as I was in such constricted
space underneath I needed someone to pull on the starter from above
with a rope to get it up in to place.

Now the only issue is, the starter runs, but the car doesn’t start.

So, now I’m looking into that.

In reply to a message from William Higgins sent Wed 23 Dec 2009:

Bill:

One major hurdle over come. Congratulations.

Open the next thread, if need be as engine cranks. but will not
start.

Clue: They need air, fuel, compression and spark all at the right
time.

Merry Christmas
