[xj40] Low Oil Pressure

I have just purchased a beautiful 92 XJ6 3.2…I was driving today
when I noticed the oil gauge reading just over the red…suddenly
and with no warning it dropped to zero and the oil warning light
came on, but she still sounded sweet …I was on a Motorway but
immediately pulled over and called RAC…got flatbedded
home …when I started up the Jag to park it it still sounded
lovely…the RAC guy said it was more likely the oil pressure
sender unit . I called a Dealership to enquire price of oil pump
and they also said to check sender unit.
Can anyone advise 1/How to do this 2/How to check oil pressure
Many thanks–

Common problem - many posts in the archives on this subject.
Most rare (unknown?) for there to be a real oil pressure
problem on these engines - it’s always the sender.

Check the connection to the little sender unit - just
forward of the oil filter under the inlet manifold. PITA to
get to but do-able with a crows foot spanner or specially
bent ‘stubby’.

Dealer will sell you a replacement oil pressure switch (not
a true pressure transducer) which acts like an idiot light
by registering mid-gauge pressure with any oil pressure in
the engine. some mail order places may still have a true
reading transducer - phone around.–

First Nick do not become alarmed this is just the sender,Jaguar oil
pumps do not give problems. Second buy yourself a copy of Haynes
Mag No. 49011 and it will explain how to replace the unit.Someone
on the list living in the UK will suggest where you can obtain a
replacement without getting Dealer shock. John. Toronto.–

First, check that the wire is still connected to the sender. Mine
came loose, and I just had to slide it on and off a couple of times
to clean the contact before it started working.

The sender is located on the left side of the engine (facing
forward) just below the 2nd and 3rd cylinders from the front. I
found that I could just squeeze my hand in below those two intake
runners, feel the sender, and check the wire.

I would not drive that car around until I was absolutely positive
that I had oil pressure.

Regards,

Edward–

Hi Nick.

You can still get the true reading senders brand new, apparently.
They are a GM or Delco part, numbers are AC Delco E1800A, GM
88924425, to quote other listers.

Once you do get one, they are a breeze with the right tools. You
need a fully open 19mm crows’ foot spanner (NOT the flare nut type)
of 8mm thickness maximum and it has to be at least 38mm from the
centre of the drive spindle to the centre of the driven nut.

Once you have the spanner, simply remove the air intake elbow &
hoses, and other interfering stuff, unbolt the unit, & replace.
Simple as that.

(Well, for me it wasn’t, but then I didn’t get the right spanner
for weeks!)

Cheers,
